
The EU is quietly rewriting the rules for physical products. Over the next few years, a growing list of goods sold in Europe — from batteries and textiles to steel, tyres, and furniture — will be required to carry a Digital Product Passport (DPP). At WIARA we made an early bet on this shift, and we built a full platform for it. Here is what a DPP is, why it matters now, and what we built to make it simple.
A Digital Product Passport is a structured, machine-readable record of a product — its composition, origin, sustainability data, repairability, and what to do at end of life. It lives behind a data carrier on the product (usually a QR code) and can be read by anyone in the chain: a consumer scanning in a shop, a repair technician, a recycler, or a market-surveillance authority. Different audiences see the level of detail relevant to them.
The DPP was introduced by the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781). It is not a single feature — it is a new layer of product transparency that the EU is rolling out product group by product group. We explain the concept in depth on our DPP overview.
The DPP is not a distant idea. It is being phased in on a concrete timeline. The battery passport becomes mandatory from February 2027; textiles, steel, aluminium, tyres, and furniture are among the priority groups for 2027–2030. For the products it covers, a passport will be a condition of access to the European market — not an optional sustainability nicety.

Here is what most companies underestimate. Generating a passport and printing a QR code is the easy part; it can be done in weeks. The real work is the data behind it: mapping your supply chain, digitising your bill of materials, and collecting material, origin, and chemical information that often sits with suppliers several tiers up. That data is gathered slowly, which is exactly why starting early is an advantage rather than a rush.

Building in-house means owning the data model, the carriers, the registry integration, and the ongoing maintenance as the rules evolve. For most companies that is a distraction from their actual product. A provider absorbs that complexity and keeps the passport compliant as the regulation changes.
